So every year before school begins I go through my kids clothes to get rid of items they have outgrown and see what they have and what is needed. This year as I began to do the normal purge routine, my 14 year old son asked me not to purchase any more jeans or tennis shoes to wear. I asked why and he stated that he only wants to wear soft pants and slides. SOFT PANTS & SLIDE SHOES! He went on to explain that he wanted basketballs shorts, joggers, t-shirts, crocs, and slides because he wants to be comfortable. Lord help me because it sounds how it looks, tacky as heck! I had been noticing that the clothes that I previously purchased for him had been in his closet unworn and some with tags on them unless I picked something out for an occasion here and there. Shoes that I purchased for the previous school year looked fairly new, however, were too small due to the normal over the summer growth spurt.
I told my son that his wardrobe would be weird without a pair of jeans and no tennis shoes and that I refuse to only buy what I consider tacky clothing. I proceed to purchase nice clothing with only a few joggers, short pants, graphic tees, and a couple of slides. I also told him that no one will be dressing like that because guys his age put thought into their looks if they want to get the girls. Long and behold school started and I picked out his first few outfits to ensure him being presentable in my eyes and allowed him to pick out his comfy look here and there until I became tired of picking out my high school kid's clothing and let him do it himself. Needless to say, each day he ran out the door to catch the bus he looked like he had just rolled right out of bed heading to school. I would go into his bedroom and try to pick out something and he would come out looking the same each day until I completely gave up! Oh and of course, all his friends dressed the same way, as well as the kids at the school so I became completely over trying to make him look like somebody other than his friends because they all even have similar hair styles! I've decided to just let him express himself however he likes through his wardrobe. I refuse to purchase any more expensive clothing and shoes. I guess I do win in the end because I get to save money.
